Sewing Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Pattern
Print out the free sleeping eye mask sewing pattern provided and cut along the cut lines to create your pattern.
Step 2: Cut Fabric
Pin your prepared sleeping eye mask sewing pattern to your fabric pieces and felt. The felt is intended for the inside of the sleeping mask to give it more substance and comfort. Cut the fabrics following the pattern. You should have 2 fabric cuts and 1 felt cut.
Step 3: Sewing the Sleeping Eye Mask
Step 3a: Pin the Elastic in Place
Strategically pin the elastic strand in the middle of one of the fabric pieces – a very small length of the elastic should poke out on each side. You’ll be sewing this “inside” the mask until you turn it later (careful only to pin on the edges).
Step 3b: Pin the Fabric Pieces Together
Lay another fabric piece on top and pin everything together – with the Right Sides Together (RST) – which means the 2 pieces of fabric are touching each other on the inside and the wrong sides of the fabric are showing on the outside.
Step 3c: Start Sewing
Whether sewing by hand or machine, start sewing along the edges of the masks leaving a 5/8″ seam allowance – make sure to leave a 1-inch opening before finishing so you have a hole to turn it. [In the image below note the 1″ opening below the right-hand side elastic]
Step 3e: Turn the Fabrics
Using the 1 inch opening you left as leverage, turn the fabric out. Simply pull the fabric through the opening so that the right sides of the fabrics are now facing out and vice versa. The elastic band should also now be on the outside.
Step 3f: Fill Mask with Felt
Using that same 1″ opening fold and slip the felt inside and smooth out. Think of it as stuffing an eye-shaped pillowcase with stuffing.
Step 3g: Finish by Closing the Opening
Your last and final step is to sew your opening closed. You can use a regular stitch if you don’t mind seeing some stitches. If you don’t want to see any stitches use a slip stitch or invisible stitch.
Viola, that’s it! If you want to customize your sleeping eye masks even further you can use Heat Transfer Vinyl or screen printing ink or fabric paint to add names, shapes, and sayings to your masks.
