What You’ll Need for Your DIY Custom Poker Playing Cards

Materials:

  • Paper (8.5”x11”): Cardstock is best for that authentic “snap”!
  • Laminator Sheets: (Optional, but great for keeping them spill-proof).
  • Photos: 2-3 clear shots of each guest.
  • Card Reference: A photo of a playing card style you love.

Tools:

  • Printer & Ink: Use your home setup or hit up Staples for professional results.
  • Scissors or Paper Cutter: For those crisp, clean edges.
  • AI Image Generator: Like Midjourney or DALL-E.
  • Canva: To lay everything out perfectly.
  • Laminator: (Optional).

How to Make Your DIY Custom Poker Playing Cards

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Create Your AI Masterpieces

Take those photos of your friends and feed them into your AI tool. Use this prompt for the best results:

“Recreate this queen card and replace the queen’s facial features with this person’s portrait. Follow the same type of illustration as a typical playing card. Add floating elements with [INTEREST ONE] and [INTEREST TWO].”

For example:
“Recreate this queen card and replace the queen’s facial features with this person’s portrait. Follow the same type of illustration as a typical playing card. Add floating elements with Knitting tools and Rock Climbing Holds.”

Pro Tip: If the images look too “real,” tell the AI: “Make the illustration flatter and remove extra shadows so it looks like a 2D playing card.”

2. Design in Canva

Open an 8.5” x 11” project. Line up your card designs—standard cards are 2.5” x 3.5”. Don’t forget to create a second page for the card backs! Use a fun pattern or classic red/blue.

3. Print and Cut

Export your design as a PDF (best for printing). Print them out on thick cardstock. Use your paper cutter to slice them into individual cards.

4. The Finishing Touch (Optional)

Run your cards through a laminator. This gives them a professional glossy finish and makes them “water-proof” for those accidental drink spills—all that jazz!

5. Cut Laminated Cards

If you chose to laminate the cards you will need to trim and re-cut.
